When I was a kid, my mom was in a book club. It was 1960, and I saw the new book on the table. The cover had a photo of a man and a little kid. I opened it and started reading. It was a first person real life account of a Navy doctor in Vietnam and Laos. When he got out of the Navy, he returned and set up his medical mission. I thought he could have made a lot of money had he stayed in the U.S. I read the three books combined under one cover.
I was shocked to read how harsh the everyday conditions were for so many people. I was sad to experience their pain and suffering. I was amazed by the doctor's commitment and love for these people. I wondered why God allowed life to be so brutal for these people and why He allowed my life to be so good. After I read the book, I read it a second time.
I had learned about the Bible and was taught about the epistles and the gospels, but I felt that in this book I had just read that I had a real modern-day bible. It was how to be like Christ in everyday life. I decided that I would be like this doctor only I would try to help people mentally and emotionally. I still have the book. This is the most important book I have ever read in my life.
