I’m a writer who regained amateur status in 2016. I like Boulder City, Nev., cheap gin, beagles, newspapers (real paper, please), sports (but not figure skating), jalapenos, “Law & Order” (especially when the DA is played by Stephen Hill), rock ’n’ roll, walking, Ina Caro, colorful T-shirts and blackened tuna. I don’t like cats, social media (except email; not sure that counts), cellphones, veal, TV news, science fiction, spiders, SUVs, leaf blowers, light beer, humidity and New Year’s Eve. I love Sharon, golf, books (again, paper), “The Rockford Files,” strong beer, retirement, short pants, blue crabs, The Mamas and The Papas, politics, Baltimore, shade trees, dimes and the skillful use of words, such as this, from Rick to Ilsa in “Casablanca”: “I wouldn’t bring up Paris if I were you; it’s poor salesmanship.”
